| The area of Agios Nikolaos has been inhabited since Prehistoric times. At Vetrinos, south west of Agios Nikolaos, evidence has been found of a Prehistoric settlement that survived through the Hellenistic era (3rd - 2rd cent. B.C.). Pirgos, north - east of Agios Nikolaos, was first inhabited at the same time and evolved into Siggos, after which the Siggitikos Gulf was named. |

| To the north - west, the site of Agios Georgios was inhabited in the 14th cent. A.D., proven by documents from monasteries of Mount Athos. The ruins of the settlement of Fournia can also be found at the modern - day site called Paleofournos. During the 14th cent. A.D., at Pirgos, the site of ancient Siggos, there was the monastery of Saint Nikolas of the Golden Arches, a branch of the Holy Monastery of Xenophon. Ruins can still be seen today. The unification of these settlements led to the creation of the modern - day village, probably named after the monastery of St. Nikolas. With a permanent population of 2,500 today, the community of Agios Nikolaos is enclosed from North to South by a dense pine forest. To the east lies the Siggitikos Gulf, also known as the Gulf of Agion Oros, with Mount Athos in the background. |
